1. Consider shopping for timeless pieces more often instead of trendy clothing

Like many I love to follow some of the latest trends and participate in them by incorporating those pieces in my wardrobe or imitate those styles in my own way. However, there are so many new trends being released every month and an abundant amount of clothing are thrown away or donated. Instead of spending so much of your money on trendy items try purchasing timeless or basic pieces. Timeless pieces such as blazers, slip dresses, biker jackets, jeans, miniskirts they won’t go out of fashion and are generally quite versatile making it easier to pick your outfit in morning.

2. Take good care of your clothes

Of course this is a no brainer but some people don’t really take this into consideration and just wash their clothing all the same. An important thing to remember when buying clothes is to check the care label, not only to learn how to wash the garment but it also acts as a guideline for extending the lifespan of the clothing. It is really worth going the extra mile to take care of your clothes because not only with your clothes last longer but will be in top condition for longer.

3. Prioritize quality over quantity

Due to fast fashion taking over, a lot of consumers don’t contemplate the quality of the item as much anymore and is more concerned about the style. As consumers when we’re spending our hard-earned money, we expect quality but many brands don’t prioritize it. I’m sure a number of us have bought a brand-new knitted sweater (whether it be cheap or expensive) and was excited about wearing it during the winter seasons but unfortunately after wearing it five times the sweater started pilling like crazy. Buying quality clothing will not only last longer but will also maintain its shape for longer and will have a better fit. Although buying good quality clothes can be expensive there are some cheaper alternatives out there you just have to look and try to learn more about materials. Whenever you go shopping next just remember this if we start showing more importance towards good quality fashion, more and more brands will recognize this and improve the quality.

4. Repair or upcycle

Oh no one of your skirts has a hole in it, you then proceed to donate it to an Op Shop. Sadly when you do this, it doesn’t exactly mean that it’ll be re-sold and may end up in a land fill. Instead try repairing the skirt there are so many sewing tutorials available on the internet or you could get a tailor to repair it. Or if you’re feeling experimental try upcycling your old clothes to turn them into a new piece of clothing. There are also a number of tutorials and guides to inspire or assist you.

5. Learn about the brands you’re supporting

Before you head out tomorrow to go on a shopping trip with your friends try looking up the brands you support and learn about their practices and environmental impact. Some major fashion brands receive their stock from manufacturers with unfair working conditions, who release an astonishing amount of carbon emissions every year, who pollute the drinking water in some countries to dispose of their waste and source their materials unethically. Look into the stores policies and values to get a better idea of what they stand for and you can decide if whether or not you still want to buy their clothes. Overall it’s just good knowledge to be aware of what you’re supporting so that you can rewards the brands that have ethical and sustainable practices.

Of course, this may not apply to everyone as some people may not have easy access to these types of stores, can’t afford these clothing or just doesn’t have time overall to implement these practices. Just do what you can within your own limits.
